Wild
West Organic Harvest - Wild West has been distributing
organic food from their Richmond-based warehouse for over
25 years. Their mission is to "ensure the vitality of
the Earth by distributing organic and natural foods with integrity".
Oso Negro
- Oso Negro is a Nelson-based micro-roastery. Their coffee
shop on Victoria St. in Nelson is a favourite haunt for many
Kootenay folks, ourselves included! Their mission is to "provide
you with a fresh, high-quality product, to support the local
economy, and to further sustainable business practices both
locally and globally. These are the reasons we roast out beans
daily, offer well-paying jobs, and search our shade-grown,
fairly traded, and organic coffee beans whenever possible."
Please ask us for a brochure for descriptions of all of their
fabulous blends.
Kootenay Bakery Café Co-operative
- The Kootenay Bakery supplies us with
fresh bread and treats every day. The purpose of the business
is "to provide sustainable employment for member and
staff, to contribute to our local economy through purchasing
locally and providing nutritious food, to function as an active
supportive member of our community, and to be as Earth-friendly
as possible, supporting fair trade and sustainable agriculture."
Most of the ingredients the Bakery uses are organic: please
ask for an ingredient list and baking schedule.
Silverking Tofu - We
are fortunate in Nelson to have our very own tofu shop! Owned
by Jeff Mock since 1994, Silverking is located in the Old
Brewery building, next to Oso Negro roastery. Jeff "provides
wholesome tofu and soymilk at a reasonable price with the
least environmental impact." He uses certified organic
soybeans, pure, unchlorinated water, and locally grown organic
herbs. Jeff makes fresh, delicious tofu every week in a variety
of flavours and textures.
The Only Bagel Bakery - The
Only provides us with fresh, authentic Montreal style bagels,
in a wide range of tasty flavours. See our Grocery
Catalogue for a full list.
Jerseyland
Organic Dairy - "We
produce wholesome organic products and believe in the humane
treatment of animals and the responsible stewardship of our
farmlands." With this statement to guide them, Ric and
Vickie Llewellyn produce a healthy and flavourful range of
certified organic dairy products, including butter, cheeses,
and yogurts. Jerseyland, located in Grand Forks, BC, won the
BC SPCA 1999 Farm of the Year award for their commitment to
the humane treatment of their herd of over 150 cows.
